Matt Mitrione vs. Kimbo Slice-Knucklepit Review

Round One
Kimbo (orthodox) received a deafening response for making his Octagon debut after becoming the internet king of backyard brawling.  Matt (southpaw) heard a joke no one else was hearing and grinned from ear to ear as Bruce Buffer introduced the two gladiators.
4.47: Matt poked out jabs and trialed a straight left followed by a high kick.

Joe Doerksen (6’0” 185) vs. Tom Lawlor (6’0” 185)
Middleweight
Referee: Yves Lavigne

Joe Doerksen vs. Tom Lawlor-Knucklepit Review

Round One
These guys didn’t need any cranking up.
4.57: Joe body-kicked and Tom (southpaw) fired off a fist combo before Joe clinched and attacked with knees, then broke free.  Tom favored his knuckles whilst Joe mixed knees, kicks and fists into the brew.
4.00: Tom landed a powerful overhand right but Joe wore it and retaliated with a high kick.
3.19: Doerksen dished out more kicks and punches; however Lawlor downed Doerksen and followed him to the floor.
3.02: Doerksen was back up and hot in pursuit.
2.35: He looked to be in trouble as Lawlor unleashed a volley of punches.  Somehow Joe weathered the storm as both men ran low on gas after the frantic pace of the opening five.

Round Two
They came out smokin’ – Tom letting his fists fly and punctuating his knuckles with strong kicks.  But Joe’s kicks were like crowbars and even when Tom blocked Joe’s kicks, they were still punishing him.  This was an amazing shootout.
3.04: Tom seized Joe’s left kick and attempted to sweep the right leg, but Joe scrambled and locked in a deep RNC.

Result: Joe Doerksen by RNC – 2.10, Round Two.

Josh Koscheck (5’10” 170) vs. Paul Daley (5’9” 170)
Welterweight
Referee: Dan Miragliotta

Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley-Knucklepit Review

Round One
Paul immediately attacked with a leaping knee that Josh saw coming.
4.29: Paul body-punched and followed with jabs.
4.04: Josh shot out Paul’s lead leg, Paul climbed up in the clinch, and Josh took him back down.
2.01: Koshcheck took Daley’s back.
1.01: Koscheck looked for a RNC.
0.52: Daley shrugged off the submission and went to knee the downed Koscheck before apparently aborting the strike.  Koscheck went down anyway, claiming he’d been illegally kneed and Dan Miragliotta deducted a point from Daley.  However, the replay clearly showed Koscheck was not struck.
0.18: Josh seized Paul’s lead leg and Paul avoided the takedown.
During the break, Dan announced that Josh was not struck by Paul and the penalty deduction was scrapped; however Josh was not penalized for taking a dive or for stalling.

Round Two
4.45: They traded before Koscheck shot for Daley’s legs and got the takedown and side control.
3.33: Daley had Koscheck in half guard.
2.14: Very little was achieved on the ground as Dan called for them to get going, but the bout remained pretty much in stalemate mode.
1.11: Josh got Paul’s back; however Paul prevented him from capitalizing.  Dan threatened to stand them up, but didn’t, and boos came from the crowd.

Round Three
Daley tried to line Koscheck up for a big hit, but was taken down by Koscheck at 3.31.
2.12: Josh mounted Paul although little was achieved and another stalemate occurred.
0.56: Paul had Josh in half guard.
The hooter sounded and Daley jobbed Koscheck, which was probably payback after Koscheck tried to fleece him of a point, and due to the frustration of having their bout stalemated.  The crowd booed when Koscheck’s hand was raised.
MMA is still the world’s fastest growing sport, but fans will eventually tire of watching ‘fighters’ evade their opponents for five rounds, as we’ve seen in the past, and grow weary of sitting through ‘fights’ being shut down.

Result: Josh Koscheck by unanimous decision.

Shogun Rua (6’1” 205) vs. Lyoto Machida (6’1” 205)
Light Heavyweight Title
Referee: Yves Lavigne

Shogun Rua vs. Lyoto Machida-Knucklepit Review

Round One
This title match is set for five rounds, but after their first meeting there’s no way Shogun is going to let this one go to the judges.
Lyoto starts off in southpaw stance and Shogun immediately kicks his lead leg.
4.45: Shogun leg-kicks; however Lyoto is expecting Shogun to focus on leg kicks after their last encounter, and retaliates with a straight left.
4.40: Machida switches to orthodox stance.
4.14: He moves in, they clash, and Rua punishes Machida with another leg kick.
4.07: Rua comes after his opponent and the evasive Machida has trouble dodging Rua’s blazing hands.
3.41: Shogun chases down Lyoto but slips in the process.  Lyoto uses the slip to latch onto Shogun and takes him down, then grabs half guard.
3.12: They scramble to their feet, clinched.
3.10: Shogun has Lyoto pressed into the cage and targets his thighs with knees before they break free.
2.52: Rua rushes Machida whilst scoring with a salvo of fists and rattles Machida via a right hand.
2.44: They clinch and Machida sweeps Rua.
2.12: Rua stands, but cops a knee to the midsection.  He has Machida’s back imbedded in the fence and recommences his knee strikes to the thighs.
1.52: They separate.
1.38: Lyoto knees to the body and Shogun counters with an overhand right a la Fedor vs. Arlovski.  Shogun moves in with g’n’p, but it’s just a formality.

Result: Shogun Rua by KO – 3.35, Round One.
