The Battles
Mark Munoz (6’0” 185) vs. Kendall Grove (6’6” 185)
Middleweight

Round One
The two
fighters faced off in orthodox stance as Kendall used his eight-inch reach
advantage to poke out jabs.
4.31:
Mark attempted to sneak under Kendall’s fence but copped a left knee to
the body for his trouble.
4.24:
He shot out Kendall’s legs and fought from guard.
4.11:
Kendall
climbed back up and had to absorb a powerful combo from the “Filipino
Wrecking Machine”.
3.57:
Munoz
moved in and got floored by a big right uppercut; however he was able to
lock onto Grove’s right leg whilst recuperating. Grove retaliated with
hammer fists and they clinched.
2.24:
Munoz
went after Grove’s right leg again like a blue heeler until 2.00, when
Marc Goddard separated them.
1.32:
Munoz
shot in and Grove sprawled.
1.21:
They
stood.
1.18:
Mark backed Kendall up with a right haymaker.
1.12:
He followed it with a matching left, then went for a shoot, prompting
Kendall to try a guillotine that transformed into a front choke.
0.45:
Mark’s head popped free; he went for the ankles again and Kendall pursued
a front choke. Mark escaped before the hooter blew.
Round Two
4.53:
Grove tagged the incoming Munoz and the pair exchanged strikes. Munoz
unloaded bombs; however he was pulled up by Grove’s left knee.
4.35:
Grove seized Munoz’s back.
3.55:
Munoz dished up some brutal g’n’p to Grove’s body and face.
2.28:
Mark increased his vicious payload and Marc Goddard had no option but to
intervene.
Result:
Mark Munoz by TKO – 2.50, Round Two.
Rafael Dos Anjos (5’9” 156) vs. Terry Etim (6’1”
154)
Lightweight
Referee: Marc Goddard

Round One
4.44:
Terry
inside-kicked and trialed a high kick.
4.33:
Rafael
leg-kicked.
4.28:
Terry inside-kicked and Rafael took a high kick on the mitts.
4.13:
Rafael
got the double-leg takedown and Terry fitted him with a guillotine whilst
wrapping Rafael’s body in an anaconda.
2.49:
Dos
Anjos broke free and worked from Etim’s guard.
2.34:
Dos Anjos got side control and commenced kneeing to Etim’s body, but Marc
Goddard broke them up after his concern about the knee strikes being close
to Etim’s spine.
1.51:
Dos Anjos attacked with a high kick and a left hook, causing Etim to
clinch.
1.30:
They
collapsed to the ground.

Etim was in Dos Anjos’s guard.
Round Two
4.43:
Rafael inside-kicked.
4.32:
Terry returned it. They sparred until 3.58, when Rafael notched up a
takedown and took side control.

Rafael sought the mount but Terry pulled him into half guard.

Dos Anjos returned to side control.
1.54:
The Brazilian successfully mounted the Brit, only to have Etim force him
back into half guard.

Dos Anjos g’n’ped from side control.

He heaved on Etim’s left arm and secured an arm bar.

Phil Davis (6’2” 205) vs. Alexander Gustafsson (6’5”

Alexander claimed center ring and Phil circled.
4.38:
They tied up, with Phil hell-bent on taking Alexander down.
3.42:
Phil
targeted Alexander’s thighs with knee strikes.
3.21:
Both men fought for the takedown; they scrambled and Phil took Alexander’s
back at 1.57.
1.39:
They stood.
1.26:
They clinched.
1.15:
Davis got the takedown and g’n’ped from half guard.
0.16:
He fitted Gustafsson with an anaconda choke and gator-rolled. Gustafsson
tapped.
Result:
Phil Davis by anaconda choke – 4.55, Round One.
Matt Hughes (5’9” 170) vs. Renzo Gracie (5’10” 171)
Welterweight

Round One
Matt is
in orthodox stance for the first time since UFC 68 when he fought Chris
Lytle. Matt obviously wants to keep this one standing. Renzo spits out
jabs, utilizing his reach advantage. They shadowbox.
3.31:
Renzo delivers a left hook, then a right to the body. He backs Matt up
with a combo before Matt clinches.
2.46:
Renzo breaks free.
2.30:
They clash and clinch; Matt shoves Renzo’s back into the fence.
2.01:
Gracie breaks free.
1.34:
Hughes leg-kicks Gracie’s lead thigh.
1.19:
Gracie
leg-kicks, but it’s checked by Hughes.
0.51:
Hughes leg-kicks.
0.43:
And
again.
0.36:
Hughes misses with a superman punch.

Gracie body-kicks.
Round Two
Renzo
fires off rapid jabs.
4.33:
Matt slams another kick into Renzo’s lead leg.
4.14:
Renzo delivers an inside kick.
3.58:
He steps
away from Matt’s left haymaker.

Renzo throws a combo.
3.43:
Matt
ties them up and takes Renzo down; however Renzo springs straight back up.
3.15:
Matt leg-kicks.

Gracie body-punches.

Gracie
body-punches.

He delivers another combo.

Hughes lands a leg kick.

Renzo body-punches and Matt counters with a leg kick. Renzo’s been
dancing out of Matt’s range and out-boxing him, but Matt is gradually
slowing Renzo to a waltz with thigh kicks.
1.25:
Hughes leg-kicks yet again and still Gracie is not checking them, which is
surprising for such an experienced fighter.
0.47:
Hughes leg-kicks.
0.18:
They clinch and Hughes punishes Gracie with strikes.
Round Three
4.38:
Matt
leg-kicks.
4.23:
And again!
3.54:
Matt is hammering Renzo’s lead thigh and Renzo has gone from dancing to
waddling around like Bo Diddley. Renzo is now a sitting duck. He can’t
dispatch solid blows with only one leg working.
2.03:
He
collapses under Matt’s next kick. Matt finishes him off with a combo.
After the fight the photographers called for a snap. Without thinking,
Hughes automatically posed in southpaw stance.
Result:
Matt Hughes by KO – 4.40, Round Three.
Frank Edgar (5’6” 154) vs. BJ Penn (5’9” 155)
Lightweight Title
Referee: Herb Dean

Round One
The
crowd chants BJ’s name as he takes center ring and Frank vibrates around
him like a charged-up speedball.
4.14:
Frank
leg-kicks and flees the scene.
3.51:
He
leg-kicks again as BJ throws jabs. Frank is like a duck at a shooting
gallery; however someone’s switched the strobe lights on. He flickers
here and he flickers there, but he’s never in the same place twice.
2.15:
Edgar leg-kicks and is out of range before Penn can retaliate.
1.57:
Edgar grabs Penn’s left leg in a takedown attempt, then releases it and
bolts.
1.15:
He moves in and Penn makes him pay for the intrusion with a blow.
1.01:
Penn
tags Edgar with a jab.
Understandably, Penn appears a little frustrated at the end of the first
five and has a cut under his left eye.
Round Two
4.57:
Frank inside-kicks. His hit-and-run tactics are making it hard for BJ to
put combos together.
4.09:
BJ wards
off another takedown attempt. Frank is frustrating BJ with his speed
and unpredictable lines of attack and retreat.
0.39:
Amazingly, Edgar snaps up Penn’s left leg and spins him to the floor.
Penn bounces back up, but his opponent is already buzzing around him like
a fly on nitro. And there’s no sign of Edgar’s slowing down.
Round Three
BJ’s
jabs are powerful; however Frank is lightning fast and doesn’t let BJ
capitalize when he does land a strike.
2.58:
BJ foils a takedown attempt although Frank is already on the move and
looking for another angle.
1.50:
Penn defends the next takedown attempt.
0.47:
And again.
At the end of round three, out of frustration, Penn rushes Edgar, but the
hooter blows.
Round Four
BJ’s
corner tells him to take Frank down, and Frank’s corner tells him to keep
mixing his strikes.
There’s no takedown attempt from BJ, but at 3.19 he does block Frank’s
takedown.
3.00:
Edgar leg-kicks and punches to the head and body. There’s still no sign
that he’s slowing up as he continues to attack and retreat at different
angles. Penn is successful with his powerful jabs, but Edgar is not there
when Penn tries to put two strikes together.
1.42:
Penn wards off another tackle.
0.54:
He
repels the next tackle, but Edgar shoves him into the cage and knees to
the body, then leaves before Penn can react. Edgar is so quick and
unpredictable.
Round Five
4.36:
Amazingly, Frank shoots in and gets a double-leg takedown. BJ springs
straight back up, but the psychological damage is done.
3.44:
BJ blocks a high kick. Nothing zaps energy like frustration and BJ
appears to be slowing down whilst Frank skyrockets around him at the same
pace.
2.00:
BJ
prevents another tackle.
As the match closes, Frank raises his hands in victory and there’s no
dispute from BJ. “The Answer” lived up to his name.
This should have been the main event!
Result:
Frank Edgar by unanimous decision.
