The Battles
Jim Miller (5’8” 155) vs. Mark Bocek (5’8” 154)
Lightweight
Referee: Yves Lavigne

Round One
Jim was
in southpaw stance and Mark in orthodox.
4.49:
They exchanged, with Mark landing a right cross before shooting in. Jim
sprawled and they clinched against the cage.
3.58:
The pair collapsed to the canvas, Mark latched onto Jim’s right leg and
Jim applied a guillotine.
3.54:
Mark’s head was free.
3.35:
They stood clinched.
2.57:
They parted.
2.31:
Bocek shot in and slammed Miller to the floor before fighting from half
guard.
1.29:
Miller attempted a kimura, Bocek grimaced in pain, but toughed it out and
pulled Miller into full guard.
Round Two
They
traded till 4.43 when Mark forced Jim back down and returned to half
guard.
4.03:
Mark momentarily took side control, only to have Jim shove him back into
half guard.
2.43:
Jim
attempted an ankle lock that Mark rolled out of.
2.19:
Mark got the mount.
2.03:
Miller rolled and Bocek latched onto his back.
1.43:
Bocek wrapped Miller in an anaconda which included Miller’s right arm.
Fortunately for the southpaw his left arm was free. In the dying seconds,
Miller stood with Bocek on his back and dumped him. It was a tough round
for Miller, but not as tough as the beating he copped from his corner.
Round Three
They
thrashed it out toe-to-toe until 3.55, when Jim warded off an incoming
shoot. The banging resumed.
2.55:
They
clinched as both men looked for the takedown.
1.20:
The pair fell to the mats, then stood tied up at 1.09.
0.36:
Mark
took Jim down. They fought for dominance until the hooter sounded.
This match could easily have gone the other way.
Result: Jim
Miller by unanimous decision.
Jon Fitch (6’0” 171) vs. Ben Saunders (6’3” 169)
Welterweight
Referee: Dan Miragliotta

Round One
4.53:
Ben leg-kicked.
4.50:
Jon inside-kicked, sweeping Ben to his left knee.
4.41:
They clinched and exchanged knees before Ben forced Jon’s back to the
wires.
4.10:
Jon reversed positions.
3.50:
He took
Ben down and progressed from butterfly guard to half guard, then back,
with Ben pressed into the fence.
2.37:
Fitch
moved to half guard and began g’n’p-ing.
2.00:
He was in full guard, but remained relentless with his g’n’p as Saunders
worked from below.
Round Two
4.55:
Jon leg-kicked.
4.52:
He high-kicked.
4.27:
They
locked up.
4.09:
Jon hoisted Ben into the air and dumped him before moving into Ben’s
guard, with Ben shoved against the cage and Jon g’n’p-ing.
1.22:
Dan Miragliotta stood the pair up, probably as a result of crowd pressure.
1.02:
Ben
rushed Jon before they tied up.
Round Three
4.53:
Fitch met Saunders with a straight right.
4.50:
They clinched.
4.43:
Saunders broke away and the stand-up continued.
4.34:
Fitch inside-kicked.
4.28:
They
tied up.
3.25:
Dan
separated them.
3.14:
Jon let go with a volley of fists and a knee to the body before the pair
clinched.
2.15:
They traded.
2.07:
Jon caught Ben’s kick and tugged him down, then g’n’ped Ben up to the
bell.
Result: Jon
Fitch by unanimous decision.
Kurt Pellegrino (5’8” 155) vs. Fabricio Camoes
(5’10” 155)
Lightweight
Referee: Yves Lavigne

Round One
Fabricio
immediately latched onto Kurt’s left leg; however Kurt resisted the
takedown and they clinched.
4.25:
Fabricio grabbed Kurt’s left arm and threw him over his shoulder, onto the
canvas.
4.15:
Kurt stood with Fabricio riding his back and seeking a RNC.
3.08:
Pellegrino dropped Camoes on his head.
2.58:
Pellegrino had Camoes’s back, then mounted him at 2.52.
2.46:
Camoes rolled and took Pellegrino into guard.
2.09:
Pellegrino assumed side control.
1.37:
He took Camoes’s back.
1.20:
Camoes pulled Pellegrino into guard.
0.55:
Pellegrino worked his way into half guard and g’n’ped.
Round Two
They
exchanged kicks.
4.41:
They tied up.
4.39:
Fabricio swept Kurt, but the fall favored Kurt, who took Fabricio’s back
before they stood and separated.
4.11:
Kurt
notched up a takedown and Fabricio tugged him into guard.
3.12:
Kurt claimed half guard, then the mount.
2.31:
Fabricio forced Kurt into half guard.
2.01:
Pellegrino had Camoes pressed into the fence.
1.25:
They were standing, clinched.
1.14:
They collapsed to the floor and Pellegrino adopted side control.
0.47:
Pellegrino locked onto Camoes’s back and fitted him with a RNC. Camoes
tapped.
Result:
Kurt Pellegrino by RNC – 4.20, Round Two.
Shane Carwin (6’2” 265) vs. Frank Mir (6’3” 265)
Heavyweight Interim Title
Referee: Dan Miragliotta

Shane
Carwin’s height is listed as 6’5” by UFC, but Frank Mir appears to be
slightly taller at 6’3”, and Shane’s website has him at 6’2”.
They face off, with Frank in southpaw and Shane in orthodox.
They dance and feel each other out.
4.24:
Frank steps in to close the gap whilst throwing a left and a right fist as
Shane locks onto Frank’s body and bulldozes him back to the other side of
the Octagon. Frank has Shane’s left arm tied up in the clinch; however
Shane is able to deliver short, powerful shots with his right fist, and
attacks Frank’s head and midsection.
4.02:
Carwin clinches Mir’s right side and looks for the takedown.
3.42:
Carwin commences knee strikes to Mir’s thighs and hurls right hooks to his
head.
2.50:
Carwin is working hard with knees and hooks when, amazingly, Dan
Miragliotta separates the pair. Randy Couture has based whole fights on
these tactics and not had them pulled up.
2.30:
They exchange blows and Frank comes forward, landing a big left elbow to
Shane’s jaw; however Shane just shrugs it off and turns Frank’s back to
the fence before resuming his knee strikes to the thighs.
1.37:
Shane launches a HUGE left hook, then a salvo of bone-rattling left
uppercuts that concertina Frank. Shane follows with a spurt of lefts and
rights; he switches to right knuckles and pummels his downed opponent.
Frank tries to roll, but the right sledgehammers keep coming. Shane’s
fists are like lightning and he’s delivering heavy-duty thunderbolts.
The new breed of UFC heavyweight has definitely arrived. What a ferocious
display of firepower!
Result:
Shane Carwin by KO – 3.48, Round One.

Shane Carwin g’n’ps Frank Mir
Georges St-Pierre (5’11” 170) vs. Dan Hardy (6’0”
170)
Welterweight Title
Referee: Kevin Mulhall

Round One
Dan
smiles and tells Georges he’s going down. Kevin Mulhall introduces the
pair as Dan grins at Georges like they’re about to visit an amusement
park.
St-Pierre takes center ring and Hardy circles.
4.42:
St-Pierre jabs and Hardy counters with a right.
4.38:
Georges
shoots in and takes Dan down before slipping into half guard.
4.13:
Dan pulls Georges into guard; however Georges gets straight back into half
guard, then side control.
3.24:
He snatches Dan’s back and has his hooks in.
2.43:
“The Outlaw” rolls and they stand – only to have GSP take Dan back down
and resume the attack from Dan’s guard.
2.25:
St-Pierre is in half guard, suffocating Hardy’s game.
1.29:
St-Pierre secures the mount.
1.40:
Hardy twists and St-Pierre grabs his back.
0.24:
GSP
locks an arm bar in deep, but Hardy lives up to his name and weathers the
pain before jumping to his feet with a smile from ear to ear.
Round Two
Dan
grins at Georges. They spar and trial jabs.
4.23:
Georges inside-kicks.
3.46:
He shoots out Dan’s left leg and takes him down before grabbing half
guard, then side control.
2.30:
Dan
sacrifices his back to avoid being mounted.
2.12:
He maneuvers into GSP’s guard.
1.48:
They
scramble and stand.
1.37:
St-Pierre side-kicks.
1.04:
He lands
a straight right and Hardy laughs it off.
0.42:
St-Pierre shoots in and downs Hardy before moving into half guard.
0.29:
Hardy
pulls St-Pierre into full guard.

Round Three
4.46:
Georges ducks under Dan’s right hook before taking him down.
4.15:
Dan has Georges in guard.
2.57:
Georges gets half guard.
2.39:
Dan pulls Georges into guard and Georges claims side control.
1.10:
Hardy stands, but gets pulled back down.
0.26:
St-Pierre takes Hardy’s back, they scramble, and the round ends with GSP
in half guard.
Round Four
4.48:
St-Pierre shoots Hardy down, then falls into half guard.
4.29:
He mounts Hardy, Hardy rolls, and GSP clamps his back.
3.37:
They scramble and Georges winds up in Dan’s guard. There’s not much g’n’p;
it’s more competing for position and Georges attempting submissions.
2.40:
Georges is in side control.
1.50:
He whacks on a kimura, the hold is in deep and nasty, but miraculously Dan
hangs tough and Georges aborts the mission. There’s no one harder than
Dan Hardy.
Round Five
4.42:
St-Pierre takes Hardy down and fights from his guard. The Canadian
dominates the fight, but there’s no way the brave Brit can be stopped.
4.14:
St-Pierre has side control.
3.47:
He grabs
Dan’s back.
3.25:
GSP is
in half guard.
2.38:
He goes for a kimura; however Dan is as immune to submissions as the honey
badger is to snake bites.
This is
a victory for both men: GSP dominates the fight, but Dan Hardy wins plenty
of admiration and will come back a stronger competitor.
Result:
Georges St-Pierre by unanimous decision.
