THE CAULIFLOWER CHRONICLES by Marshal D. Carper Victory Belt Publishing
© Marc Wickert
The Cauliflower Chronicles offers a unique view for anyone thinking of visiting Hawaii and prepared to venture outside the ABC-shop Honolulu circle. Unfortunately, most people travelling to Hawaii only see the adulterated, “tourist” part of Hawaii whilst on a stopover flight to or from the mainland of USA. Early in Marshal Carper’s five-month stay in Hilo, he discovers many native Hawaiians resent the American takeover of their land and believe “the legality of Hawaii’s annexation in 1898 is questionable.” Carper says “I, as I suspect most mainlanders, had no idea that succession was a serious cause for Hawaiians.” Kau Inoa is one of many movements pushing for an opinion poll by locals regarding the preservation of their heritage and ultimately Hawaii’s independence. Marshal presents an insight into a Hawaii that is rich with pride and tradition, sadly missing from travel brochures showcasing The Aloha State. The spinal thread of The Cauliflower Chronicles is Carper’s original reason for journeying to Hawaii: to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Champion, BJ Penn. But Carper soon discovers rolling with the “big boys” isn’t child’s play. “The training sessions weren’t getting easier. I was still being thrown and submitted. Submissions came on hard and fast. Stray elbows and knees connected with my face and ribs. I was a punching bag.” The Cauliflower Chronicles is a most enjoyable read.
