What an excellent DVD!

Recently re-released, Fedor Emelianenko – The Last Emperor now provides both English and French subtitles, but retains its authenticity and ambience by being recorded in Russian.

This is an in-depth probe into the life of the greatest fighter of all time, and although some footage from this DVD was made available for the documentary Fedor: the Baddest Man on the Planet, there is plenty more in this presentation that wasn’t shown in the documentary.

At the age of two, Fedor and his family relocated from the Ukraine to the industrial city of Stary Oskol in Russia’s Belgorod region.  The DVD opens with Fedor jogging around Stary Oskol before you join him in the passenger seat of his Toyota as he drives you to visit his family and many friends around his hometown and the gym.

Denis Kurilov recalls how he met Emelianenko at a sport summer camp when they were about eight years old and took up judo together.  Like many of Fedor’s early companions, Denis has remained a close friend.

Emelianenko’s inner world is extremely humble – his hometown, gym, lifestyle…  Despite Fedor establishing himself as the most dominant fighter the world has seen, it’s his humility and strength of character that have kept him grounded throughout his career.  Of life in his hometown, Emelianenko says “I prefer small calm towns… Stary Oskol is where I grew up, the place that I remember since my early childhood… It’s my town.  I know every street, every district.  It’s the place where I feel comfortable and calm.”

Fedor’s mother tells how an early childhood illness almost took Fedor’s life, how he recovered and was always in fights, then took up judo to burn off some excessive energy.

Fedor later talks of the two years he served in the Russian army from 18 till 20 – the first year firefighting and the second year assigned to a tank unit, all the while he found time to train in the gym.

In the DVD you will meet some of Fedor’s trainers: Vladimir Voronov (sambo/judo), Aleksander Michkov (boxing), Mikhail Malinin (boxing), Oleg Neustrov (trainer and masseur), and Fedor’s main training partner, Kirill Sidelnikov.  But it’s worth ordering this DVD just to see a 230-pound man effortlessly crank out 20 explosive chin-ups like it’s a stroll in Gorky Park.

Fights included are Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia and Fedor vs. Andrei Arlovski.

Bonus Features:

·        Stary Oskol Slideshow (Fedor training and sparring shots)

·        Strikeforce Press Conference (Fedor and Brett Rogers pre-fight)

·        Strikeforce Fight Night (Fedor and entourage chilling out before Brett Rogers fight)

·        Strikeforce Press Meeting (an extremely relaxed Fedor shadowboxing and answering questions for the media)

·        Strikeforce Photo Shoot (Fedor laughs it up and obliges for more photos).

DVD running time 95 minutes.

The beauty of our modern age for anyone interested in combat sport or self-defense is that ultimate fighting has revealed which are the world’s best fighting systems and which disciplines and techniques are impractical.

This high-tech age also enables MMA enthusiasts to be personally coached in their own homes by the best competitors and instructors on the planet – all for the price of a book or DVD.

Fedor is a classic example: Here readers have access to Fedor Emelianenko, the “Undisputed King of MMA”.  And his book definitely delivers the goods – without being pretentious or flowery.  “Many of the techniques might not seem as fancy as the ones demonstrated in other books, but I guarantee that the ones on the following pages have all been tried and tested in battle,” says Fedor.

Emelianenko covers striking techniques, counterattacks, clinching, throws and takedowns, ground techniques (top and bottom), submissions and escapes…  On each occasion he also explains what separates his techniques from those of other combatants, e.g., “With most of my punches I turn my hand over more than most fighters.”

Fedor is an elaborately illustrated book with every move shown clearly through multi-angled photos and graphic type so nothing is left to the reader’s interpretation.  What could be better than having Fedor Emelianenko in your corner?
